Cloudflare error 1012 reports access denied because of activity associated with a visitor’s computer or network. Review the device using trusted security software and report the failed request to the site owner. The error screen alone does not identify a particular infection, and a clean scan does not automatically change the owner’s access policy.

Separate device review from access-policy review
| Role or result | Next step | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Visitor on a personal device | Update trusted security software and run its full scan | Scan outcome and exact failure time |
| Visitor on a managed device | Contact its administrator | Affected URL and request context |
| Site owner | Review the actual access decision | Request identifier, relevant policy and network context |
| Device checked but access still denied | Request a site-side review | Updated error and ordinary action attempted |
A visitor can start with a careful device check
Use the security software already trusted on the device, bring it up to date, and run the recommended scan. Avoid downloading a repair tool from an unfamiliar advertisement simply because an access-denied message appeared.
If the device belongs to an employer or school, report the issue to its administrator. The network or device may be managed, and its team can review the relevant activity without requiring you to change protections yourself.
A clean scan is useful information, but it does not automatically change the website’s access policy. Conversely, the website error is not a diagnostic report identifying a particular infection. Keep those observations separate when discussing the problem.
Give the site owner a clear access request
A useful report: “This article returned 1012 at this time while I used this browser on this network.” Add the error screenshot and any request identifier. Share a network address privately only when needed for matching the request. Describe completed device checks without claiming the error proves their outcome.
Keep the page address, error screenshot, failure time, and any request identifier shown. Describe the ordinary action you were trying to perform. A concise explanation makes it easier for the owner to find and review the request.
For example, a visitor might report that an article was blocked while browsing from a workplace network. That does not identify the reason, but it supplies context for the owner and the network administrator. A vague statement that the website never works gives them less to investigate.
If the owner requests your public IP address, share it privately through the support conversation. Avoid posting network details in a public comment. The relevant purpose is to match the request with the site’s access decision.
The owner should review the reason before making an exception
Record the security decision, the reported request and whether other activity from that network explains the block. Any reviewed exception needs a defined scope and rationale. If suspicious activity is found, resolving it and reviewing access are separate tasks; restoration of one page does not settle the device issue.
As the owner, compare the report with the applicable security configuration and available request evidence. Identify which decision denied the request and whether that decision still fits the site’s policy. The code alone is not enough to establish an appropriate exception.
A legitimate visitor and a problematic request pattern can sometimes be associated with the same network. The administrator needs to review the context rather than assuming that the visitor’s identity explains every request from that address.
Cloudflare’s support page directs visitors to the site owner for an IP allowance where appropriate. Before applying an exception, consider what it covers and whether it is temporary or ongoing. Keep any adjustment narrow enough to match the reviewed situation.
If the report reveals suspicious device activity, resolving that activity belongs alongside the access review. Simply allowing the connection may restore the page while leaving the underlying problem unaddressed.
Confirm the intended access has been restored
After the device review or an agreed site-side adjustment, try the original public page again. Record the time and result so that the owner can connect the test with the relevant access decision.
If the original action involved a form, account, or order, confirm its status before repeating it. Use harmless test data where a workflow needs verification. Access returning does not reveal whether an earlier submission was already received.
When the error persists, give the owner the updated evidence, including whether the device scan was completed and whether other requests from the same environment behave differently. Avoid repeatedly changing networks to evade a policy that has not yet been reviewed.
A useful resolution explains why access was denied and what changed. Keep that explanation with the site’s security notes, especially if an exception was added. It lets a future administrator understand the decision without rediscovering the visitor’s original problem.

Record the reviewed device or network context
Retest the original address after the responsible review and record the time. For a previous submission, confirm its status before repeating it. Keep the device check outcome, owner’s decision and reason for any adjustment together so a later administrator can understand the resolution.
